Classical Music

I'm interested in classical music of all ages. My special favorites are (this list is less remarkable than the composers that comprise it!):

Mediaeval Music

Among the early music, I especially like the church music, like Hildegard von Bingen, Thomas Tallis, Josquin des Prez and Guillaume Dufay. Both church and wordly music by Walter Frye and Claudio Monteverdi the first opera composer.

Baroque Music

Arguably the greatest of all time: J.S. Bach (*1685 Eisenach +1750 Leipzig)
You'll find there the catalogue of his works (large!) BWV, additional information like a discography. Here is some music.

I also like Italian ( Vivaldi, Locatelli), Spanish (Soler) and English ( Purcell) Baroque. Especially worthy of mention is Domenico Scarlatti , who, though Italian wrote most of his works (his 555 "Sonate") as a harpsichord teacher to the Spanish Infanta.

Vienna Classic

W.A. Mozart. (*1756 Salzburg +1791 Vienna)
Maybe you always wanted to know what the ubiquitous KV means. It's a catalogue of his works and you can find it here. Now for some music!

Early Romanticism

The greatest songwriter of all time: Franz Schubert. (*1797 Vienna +1828 Vienna)
The texts of 700+ of his songs can be found here.

High Romanticism

Johannes Brahms
A monumental archive of classical music can be found at the WIMA: Werner Icking Music Archive

There are a couple of newsgroups devoted to classical music. The greatest is rec.music.classical , whereas rec.music.early is devoted to (yes) early music (say up to JSB).
