Announcement AIO Course Computational Fluid Dynamics I

Teachers: prof.dr. A.E.P. Veldman (RU Groningen) and prof.dr.ir. P. Wesseling (TU Delft)
Period: January 30 - February 3, 2006
Location: TU Delft, EWI Building, Mekelweg 4, 2628 CD Delft
Course: Lecture room D Exercises: Room HB 05.150

Synopsis:
This is Part I of three parts of a postgraduate course in computational fluid dynamics. This course is organized by the JM Burgers Center, the national research school in fluid dynamics. The course is aimed at graduate students, but other interested persons are welcome as well. The course consists of lectures and computer exercises. Lecture notes are made available, including a free copy of the book "Principles of Computational Fluid Dynamics" by P. Wesseling, Springer, Heidelberg, 2001.
The following subjects will be treated in Part I:

1. The basic equations of fluid dynamics
2. Analytical aspects of partial differential equations
3. Qualitative aspects of the convection-diffusion equation, boundary layers and maximum principles.
4. Numerical aspects of the convection-diffusion equation: discretization; accuracy and local grid refinement; stability; refined upwind techniques.
5. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations: discretization on staggered grids; pressure correction method; various implicit and explicit schemes for various purposes (for example, direct and large-eddy simulation).
6. Hyperbolic systems: Riemann problem; entropy condition; numerical schemes; the MUSCL method.
7. The shallow-water equations: analytical and numerical aspects
